Osteopathy

Gardening and back strain

Hampshire gardens and osteopathy: how weeding, lifting compost and long afternoons on the knees load the back — and how to recover without panic.

An English garden and the strain of outdoor work

A very local pattern

In spring and autumn I see a run of people who spent Saturday in the garden and cannot get out of the car on Monday. Prolonged flexion — bending to weed — plus an awkward lift of a compost bag is a classic mix.

Most of these episodes are mechanical and settle with time, sensible movement and, for some, hands-on treatment to ease spasm and restore confidence to bend again.

Prevention without becoming precious

Change height: use a kneeler, switch tasks, avoid filling the wheelbarrow so full you cannot see over it. Lift with the load close. That is dull advice because it works.

When it is more than a weekend strain

Pain that shoots below the knee with weakness, or pain after a fall from a ladder, is a different pathway. Say so in the history. I would rather send you to the right place than treat the wrong problem.
