Meniscus tears: rehab or surgery?

Not every torn meniscus needs an operation. A physiotherapist’s view of locking, swelling and loading.

Symptoms and what they can mean

A twist, a swollen knee, sometimes a catch. True locking that you cannot unlock is different from a noisy click. Ageing menisci also tear quietly on scans of pain-free people.

What we can do in clinic

Many degenerative tears do well with strength and patience. I will not block a surgeon if the knee is mechanically locked. I will not rush you to theatre for a scan finding alone.

Red flags and when to see your GP

A knee that will not straighten after trauma needs prompt medical assessment.
