Osteopathy

Stiffness, osteoarthritis and hands-on care

Osteopathy will not reverse osteoarthritis. Steve Hall on how we still help people with stiff, sore joints stay active in later life.

Honesty is part of the treatment

If imaging shows osteoarthritis, I will not tell you I can rebuild cartilage. I will tell you we can often improve how the neighbouring joints share work, reduce protective muscle spasm, and make walking less of a negotiation.

Activity is medicine — paced

NICE is clear that people with osteoarthritis should be supported to move. Hands-on care that leaves you able to walk to the high street is aligned with that. A heroic treatment that leaves you on the sofa for three days is not.

Medication and surgery

Stay on the plan your GP or consultant set unless they change it. If a joint replacement is being discussed, osteopathy is about keeping you as comfortable as possible in the meantime, not about talking you out of an operation you need.
