Counselling

When therapy feels awkward

Silence, small talk, wondering if you are doing it wrong — Jamie Blackall on the ordinary strangeness of a first month.

What this can look like

Filling the hour with weather. Leaving and thinking of the real sentence in the car. Worry that I am bored. Worry that you are boring.

How counselling can help

Awkward is data. We can talk about the awkward. You are not failing the session. If after a fair start it is not a fit, we say so — that is professionalism, not a personal rejection you have to swallow.

When it is more than counselling

Awkward is not an emergency. Feeling unsafe in your life is. Know the difference.
