A counsellor cannot make a 15-year-old open up on demand. What we can do is offer a third space that is not home and not school, with less of a row attached.
Self-harm, not eating, disappearing from friendship groups, or talk of not wanting to be alive needs a GP and, if needed, crisis care. Do not wait for them to “want counselling” if safety is in question.
You can use the 15 minutes to ask how I work. If your child will not attend, we can still think about what you can change in the system around them — without turning you into the patient by accident.
